Hampi is an ancient village in the south Indian state of Karnataka.Hampi is famous for its ruins belonging to the erstwhile medieval Hindu kingdom of Vijaynagar and it is declared a World Heritage site.Hampi was the capital of the Vijayanagara Empire in the 14th century,located on the bank of Tungabhadra River about 11 km away from Hospet City.Vijayanagara Rulers decorated and designed this city with lots of lovely temples, palaces, market streets and monuments which made this location one of the famous ancient metropolises in India.Hampi is famous for Purandara Festival. This annual festival is held in January-February in the Vittal temple to celebrate the birth anniversary of the medieval poet-composer, Purandar.The best time to visit Hampi is from October to March.
